At Angelina’s Song, we are honored to support passionate musicians who use their talents to make a difference. One such recipient is Mackynsie McKedy, a junior at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) studying Music Therapy. Her journey as a musician and future therapist is nothing short of inspiring.

A Musical Legacy

Mackynsie’s love for music began at age six, deeply rooted in her family’s musical background.

Her father, a steel guitarist and vocalist, and her brother, who plays music, became her biggest influence. Together, they formed The McKedy Band, touring the country and performing as a family.

“Growing up in a musical family inspired me to get involved in playing music,” she noted. “We still perform together to this day and have won and been nominated for many prestigious awards!”

Her primary instrument is the fiddle, but Mackynsie sings and plays guitar and mandolin. Inspired by legends such as Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, and Bob Wills, Mackynsie has had the incredible opportunity to perform alongside artists like Diamond Rio, Gene Watson, and Tayla Lynn. She has also released 10 singles under Clarksville Creative Sound, fulfilling a lifelong dream.

“If I could tell my younger self that she is now a country music recording artist and has accepted an award in the Grand Ole Opry circle, I don’t think she would have believed me,” she reflects.

Her newest song, “You’re Always Talking in Your Sleep,” is available to stream on all major platforms and can even be found on TouchTunes jukeboxes!

Discovering Music Therapy

“I have always had a desire to use my love for music to help others,” Mackynsie said.

During her senior year of high school, she discovered music therapy, which combined her love for music and service. However, her journey to becoming a music therapy student was not easy. Many universities turned her away because she was not classically trained.

“I almost gave up on going to college completely,” Mackynsie admits. But SWOSU “accepted me as I am and gave me the opportunity to hone my skills as the Jazz Violinist in the Jazz Orchestra.”

The Power of Music

Through her studies, Mackynsie has already made a profound impact on the lives of many. One of her most memorable experiences was working with a hospice patient’s husband, guiding him toward acceptance through music therapy.

It was one of the first times I felt like I actually did music therapy,” she says.

Whether helping children in special education, supporting domestic violence survivors, or bringing joy to nursing home residents, she sees firsthand how music heals.

As Miss Lincoln County 2025, Mackynsie uses her platform to advocate for music therapy through her initiative, Melodies Making a Difference. She travels to hospitals, schools, and assisted living homes to educate people about the benefits of music therapy.

“It is my mission to bring appreciation, funding, and awareness to this incredible profession because it is so important and improves the lives of so many people,” she said.

Looking Ahead

After graduation, Mackynsie plans to continue her work as a musician and a therapist. She dreams of opening her own private music therapy practice, Fiddles and Fashion, while continuing to record and release music.

For those considering a path in music therapy, Mackynsie offers this advice: “Take each day, moment, opportunity, and challenge one step at a time. It’s easy to become overwhelmed, but maintaining a healthy work, school, and personal life balance is key to prioritizing your mental health.”

The Impact of Angelina’s Song

Receiving a scholarship from Angelina’s Song has been a game-changer for Mackynsie.

“This organization and scholarship mean so much to me because it has allowed me to continue my music therapy education without the worry of financial struggles,” she says. “Because of this organization, I am able to continue to make a difference and advocate for music therapy every single day.”

We at Angelina’s Song are incredibly proud to support Mackynsie on her journey. Her passion for music and dedication to healing through music therapy embody the spirit of our mission. We can’t wait to see all the incredible things she will accomplish in the future!
