September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a month dedicated to raising awareness for a condition affecting families worldwide. TouchTunes is raising awareness this month by including an updated Angelina’s Song playlist on its jukeboxes.

Pediatric cancer is the leading cause of death from disease for children and adolescents. The cause of most pediatric cancers remains unknown. About 15,000 children and adolescents, ages 0 to 19, are diagnosed with cancer annually in the U.S., and 1,590 will die of the disease, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Many childhood cancers can be found early, either by a child's doctor or by parents or relatives. However, some early stages of pediatric cancers can be hard to recognize because symptoms are often similar to common illnesses or injuries. Children frequently get sick and have bumps or bruises, which can mask early signs.

Childhood cancer is not common, but it is important to have your children examined by a doctor if they have unusual signs or symptoms that do not go away, such as these listed by the American Cancer Society:

  • Unusual lump(s) or swelling

  • Unexplained paleness

  • Loss of energy

  • Easy bruising or bleeding

  • Ongoing pain in one area of the body

  • Limping

  • Unexplained fever or illness that doesn't go away

  • Frequent headaches

  • Often with vomiting

  • Sudden eye or vision changes

  • Unexplained weight loss

If your child has symptoms, please see a doctor to find and treat the cause. Other symptoms are also possible, depending on the type of cancer.
